Gorilla Chop – the perfect beginner dive site and a macro heaven

Gorilla Chop is one of Okinawa’s premier beach diving spots, renowned for its stunning underwater landscapes and convenient accessibility. Named after a distinctive rock formation resembling a gorilla’s head executing a karate chop, this site offers a unique diving experience right off the shores of the island.

What sets Gorilla Chop apart is its gradual descent into deeper waters. This makes it a perfect place for divers of all skill levels. It starts from just 2 meters deep and gently sloping down to a maximum depth of 15 meters. The transition is so subtle that without a dive computer, it might go unnoticed. This gradual incline allows for a leisurely exploration of the area without the need to rush.

The dive site features four different platforms nestled in the deeper sections, creating an enchanting artificial reef teeming with marine life. Vibrant tree corals adorn the metal structures, providing a picturesque backdrop for observing the abundant fish population. There is plenty of space to conduct two separate dives without retracing your steps. Gorilla Chop offers a truly immersive and relaxing underwater adventure.

The dive site features rocky formations and a sandy bottom, creating a diverse underwater landscape. The tops of the rock formations are adorned with hard corals, predominantly table corals, as well as soft corals such as sponge corals in various colors. The sandy bottom makes the site ideal for diving instruction at all skill levels, offering a forgiving environment for learners.

Along the entrances, a sea wall extends. It is characterized by its distinctive concrete tetrapod structure. This feature adds visual interest to the dive and provides hiding spots for marine life. Dive enthusiasts will appreciate the unique scenery and the opportunity to encounter diverse marine species amidst the underwater terrain.

One of the best snorkeling places

Gorilla Chop isn’t just a top spot for diving. It’s also one of the premier destinations for snorkeling. Its easy water access and shallow depths make it perfect for snorkelers of all levels, and its favorable conditions make it a year-round option, even during Okinawa’s winter months. Unlike many dive sites that become inaccessible due to north winds, Gorilla Chop remains protected thanks to its south-facing orientation, shielding it from the harsh northern winds.

Whether you’re a beginner needing a life jacket or an experienced freediver, who wants a weight belt for doing some breath hold dives up to 15m, Live for Diving has everything you need to make the most of your underwater adventure at Gorilla Chop.
